Chicago has a humid continental climate, which means it experiences the full violence of the seasons — and its humidity along with them. In summer, southerly winds can pull deep Gulf of Mexico moisture up the Mississippi Valley and park it over the city. During the worst heat waves, dew points surge into the 70s°F and the air turns genuinely dangerous; the notorious 1995 heat wave that killed hundreds was as much a humidity story as a temperature one.

Then there is Lake Michigan, the wild card in every Chicago forecast. On a hot afternoon a lake breeze can push cool, moist air a few miles inland, dropping temperature and nudging humidity up along the shoreline while neighborhoods farther west bake drier and hotter. The lake works the other way in the cold months too: relatively mild water adds moisture and feeds the lake-effect clouds and snow that gray out the city for weeks. Two readings taken the same hour downtown and in the western suburbs can genuinely disagree.

Winter is cold and, in absolute terms, dry — Arctic air holds little water vapor even when the relative-humidity number looks high. Spring is the volatile season, when warm humid surges collide with lingering cold to fire off the thunderstorms the region is known for. It is that constant tug-of-war between Gulf moisture from the south and dry Canadian air from the north, refereed by the lake, that gives Chicago humidity its whiplash character.
