Houston sits barely fifty miles from the warm Gulf of Mexico in a humid subtropical climate, and that proximity dominates everything. A near-constant onshore flow carries tropical moisture inland, so the city runs among the highest dew points of any major US metro — routinely in the 70s°F through the long summer. That is why a Houston afternoon can feel punishing even when the thermometer reads the same as a drier southwestern city: the air simply cannot cool you by evaporating sweat when it is already this saturated.

Unlike northern cities, Houston gets very little seasonal relief. Winters are mild and often damp rather than crisp, and even the "dry" stretches are humid by most of the country's standards. The flat, low-lying coastal terrain drains poorly and sits under a sea-breeze regime that fires off afternoon thunderstorms through much of the warm season, recharging the moisture almost as fast as the sun can burn it off.

Day to day it shows up more gently as heavy morning dew, frequent fog, and a stickiness that lingers well into the evening because the humid air holds the day's heat.
